My Hair Journey Became Black Therapy
Growing up biracial and being raised by a single mother of four, caring for my natural hair was not always easy. My mother had loose, wavy hair and did not know how to properly care for my texture. For years, I thought my hair was simply unmanageable.
At 15, I learned that much of the difficulty came from damage caused by a chemical treatment I had received as a young child. That realization changed the way I saw my hair. I finally cut it and made a promise to care for it in the healthiest and most intentional way possible.
I began researching natural hair care, experimenting with different techniques, and learning what my curls truly needed.
That journey eventually became Black Therapy. I created this brand to help others care for their natural texture with products made to support moisture, nourishment, softness, and confidence.
Black Therapy is the care and knowledge I wish I had growing up, and now I get to share it with you.
Creating What I Couldn’t Find
By the time I graduated high school, many of the products I loved had either been discontinued or reformulated. I struggled to find something that gave my hair the moisture, slip, and nourishment I wanted, so I decided to create my own. It took years of experimenting, learning, and refusing to give up. After about four years, I created the conditioner I had always wanted. Something deeply hydrating, easy to detangle with, and made to nourish curly, kinky, coily, and coarse textures. That journey became Black Therapy.
The name represents the care I wanted to give textured hair. A nourishing experience that helps replenish moisture, soften strands, and make detangling easier. Black Therapy was created with our natural textures in mind, while still being made for anyone who wants to give their curls and coils the care they deserve. This is my story, Lauryn Thee Empress, and the story behind Black Therapy.
